Launching the list editor of The Global Journal Alexis Kalagas said: “In the process of researching, refining and ranking our Top 100 list, the team at The Global Journal learnt much about just how diverse, dynamic and innovative the NGO sector truly is”. International Alert came 79th out of the top 100, and of the NGOs that list themselves as “peacebuilding” Alert came second overall. Based in Geneva, the Global Journal is read widely by academics, policy makers, diplomats and others involved in different forms of global governance. The list is aimed at giving those audiences an insight into the highest performing NGOs involved in addressing some of the most challenging issues of the day. Explaining International Alert's inclusion, the judges panel gave the following citation: “Working across the Caucasus, Asia, the Middle East, Great Lakes and West Africa, Latin America and on home soil in the United Kingdom, International Alert equips individuals with the tools to avoid recurrent violence. In each conflict, its personnel conduct careful analysis, assess root causes, and attempt to bridge gaps with dialogue – all whilst strengthening local capacity through training, advice and support. Recognising that a peaceful society is only possible by working at both a high level as well as at the grassroots – and linking the two – International Alert has sought to continually push the boundaries of peacebuilding practice, including by drawing attention to underlying societal drivers of conflict through its Peacebuilding Issues Programme”.
